Fenerbahçe, victory in the League

Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş close the 1st round of the Turkish league with victory

Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş closed the 1st round of the 2023-2024 Turkish league season with victory, while reigning Süper Lig champion Galatasaray got goalless draw at Kayseri.

An early goal by Bosnian striker Edin Džeko after 3 minutes put Fenerbahçe ahead in Sunday’s home game against Gaziantep FK, who just returned after the earthquake in Turkey; Džeko again appeared on 17 minute to make the 2-0. Gaziantep, with a player less due to the expulsion of the Romanian Maxim in the 23rd minute after protesting a referee decision, managed to reduce the advantage with a header from Arda Kızıldağ in the added time of the first half, but the tense game – clearly dominated by the Fener – was definitely over.

For its part, Beşiktaş opened the new season of the Turkish Super League with a 1-0 victory against Karagümrük in Istanbul; Gedson Fernandes was the author of the only goal of the match, after 85 minutes of play, which beat Argentine goalkeeper Matías Dituro, who was the best on his team. Curiously, the 1st round of the Turkish league closed with Hatayspor – also one of the teams that had to retire after the earthquake – as the leader for the first time in its history after having thrashed Pendikspor 1-5.
