Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan attended the opening ceremony for the construction of the future Istanbul Canal on Saturday, a €13 billion mega-project to cross Istanbul with an artificial water canal, which will be completed in 6 years. The works were inaugurated with the construction of the future Sazlıdere bridge, one of the 6 that will cross the canal, on whose banks two cities for 500,000 inhabitants will also be built. Erdoğan assured that the channel, 45 km long and 275 meters wide, will open a new page in the history of the Turkish Republic and will alleviate traffic and the risk of accidents in the Bosphorus Strait, through which every year passed 3,000 ships in 1931 compared to the 78,000 expected to cross in 2050.
