Crime in Turkey: man kills girlfriend who wanted to leave him, then takes his own life

A new case of gender-based violence in Turkey has resulted in the death of a woman in the northern province of Samsun, where a man killed his girlfriend by shooting her with a gun after she had expressed her intention to end the relationship. The alleged perpetrator subsequently took his own life with the same weapon.

According to the Turkish newspaper Habertürk, the horrific incident took place this morning when İsmail Yurtseven, aged 38, went to the bungalow where his partner, Latife Mengüç, aged 50, and her brother, identified only by the initials Ş. M., were staying. Following a previous argument, the woman had expressed her wish to end the relationship she was in with the man.

After a further argument that broke out inside the accommodation, Yurtseven shot Mengüç with a pistol he had brought to the scene. He then used the same firearm to shoot himself.

Following an emergency call, officers from the Turkish gendarmerie and medical teams attended the scene, but they could only confirm that both the shooter and the woman had died.

After the necessary examination had been carried out at the scene of the tragedy, both bodies were transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Samsun to practise the autopsy. Authorities in Turkey have launched an investigation to clarify what happened.
