A tenant opened fire on his landlord and the landlord’s wife during an argument, allegedly over the rent, in Maltepe, south-east of Istanbul. Both spouses were killed in the altercation, whilst a lawyer who was at the scene and accompanying the couple was seriously injured. The suspect was eventually arrested by members of the police special operations teams following an intense shooting.
The incident took place at around 13:10 local time (12:10 CET) in the Gülsuyu neighbourhood. According to the latest available information, the tenant, identified as 63-year-old Mehmet T., fired a gun at the couple who owned the house following a heated argument with them. The property owner, 61-year-old Osman A., and his wife Nursen A., also aged 61, were killed in the attack; Emir Ali S., a 29-year-old lawyer who was at the scene, suffered serious gunshot wounds but managed to flee the crime scene under his own steam, according to the Turkish newspaper Hürriyet.
After several witnesses alerted the emergency services (112), officers from the police and special operations units, along with medical teams, were dispatched to the scene. The suspect, Mehmet T., put up stiff resistance to his arrest and even fired several shots into the street from inside the building, although he was eventually subdued and arrested by special operations officers.
The suspect even fired shots at the police
The Governor’s Office of Istanbul issued a statement on the incident, noting that “On Thursday 10 September 2026, at approximately 1.10 pm, an argument between a landlord and a tenant led to a brawl on Taşocağı Street, in the Gülsuyu neighbourhood of the Maltepe district.
