More than 2,000 people died last year in recorded incidents involving firearms in Turkey, while almost 4,000 were injured by gun fire shots, according to an annual report by a Turkish association dedicated to fighting the proliferation of weapons in the Eurasian country.
According to a report whose conclusions have been picked up by the Turkish press media, in 2024 a total of 3,801 incidents were recorded in Turkey, leaving 2,370 dead and 3,829 injured; firearms were involved in 3,194 of these incidents, while sharp objects, mainly knives but also machetes or axes, were used in another 607.
The region of Turkey most affected by this type of event continued to be the Marmara region, the most populated in the country, which includes Istanbul, with a total of 1,145 incidents involving weapons causing 609 deaths and 1,140 injuries. In second place was the south-eastern Anatolia region, with 631 incidents and 415 deaths; it was followed by the Black Sea region (500 incidents), with the province of Samsun standing out in particular, while in Central Anatolia 499 incidents were documented, mainly in Konya and in the country’s capital, Ankara.
The regions of Turkey where there were fewer incidents involving weapons were the Aegean (413, mainly in Izmir), the Mediterranean (399 incidents, mainly in Adana and Antalya) and Eastern Anatolia (214 cases), with Malatya standing out in the latter.
The report, presented by the Umut (Hope) Foundation, also highlights the growing number of deaths from firearms within the family environment, with 18 deaths recorded in the first 44 days of the year alone in Konya, Şanlıurfa, Mersin and Istanbul, including several tragic murders involving fathers or mothers killing their own children, either by shooting or stabbing them. The foundation warns that armed violence continues growing every year in Turkey, and calls on the authorities to take urgent measures including restricting individual access to weapons.
