One worker killed and another rescued after landslide in Istanbul

A landslide that occurred this morning in Istanbul whilst excavation work was being carried out on the foundations of a building left two workers buried beneath the ground in the Bahçelievler district, to the west of the Turkish metropolis. Rescue teams managed to pull one of them out alive, whilst the other was killed.

The accident occurred at around 12.35 pm whilst excavation work was being carried out on a plot of land on İbrahim Çallı Street, in the Bahçelievler district of Istanbul. The two workers involved, who turned out to be brothers, were trapped underground.

After receiving the alert, personnel from the police, fire service, medical services and the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) rushed to the scene of the incident. Whilst the police cordoned off the area, the teams began search and rescue operations, according to the Turkish news website Habertürk.

One of the brothers was rescued alive

The two buried workers were identified as brothers Muhittin Uzunoğlu and Hasan Uzunoğlu. Thanks to the efforts of the emergency services, Muhittin Uzunoğlu, aged 60, was located and extracted from the site, before being taken into the care of the medical services, who transferred him to a hospital.

The deputy mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Nuri Aslan, issued a statement to the media regarding the landslide and confirmed that “The man who has been rescued is in good health”.

Subsequently, rescue teams managed to recover the body of Hasan Uzunoğlu, the other worker who had been buried under the rubble as a result of the construction site collapse. The entire rescue operation was filmed from the air using a drone, which captured the emergency services’ efforts second by second.
