Eyüpspor and Beşiktaş played out a 2-2 draw in the closing match of the 19th round of the Turkish Super League at the Eyüp stadium in Istanbul, in a match marked by a spectacular comeback by the home side after an early goal by the Black Eagles, and a result that left both teams with mixed feelings and exacerbated Sergen Yalçın’s team’s crisis.
The game quickly got underway for the visitors, with Orkun Kökçü giving Beşiktaş the lead just six minutes into the game after a clumsy kick by the home goalkeeper, Jankat Yılmaz, practically handed the ball to the boots of the Dutch-Turkish player. After this goal, Sergen Yalçın’s team dominated most of the first half without any further movement in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, Eyüpspor came out strongly and Umut Bozok equalised in the 57th minute with a precise left-footed shot from the edge of the box that Ersin Destanoğlu could not keep out; just three minutes earlier, Beşiktaş had almost scored a second goal when Rıdvan Yılmaz‘s shot from outside the box crashed narrowly against the crossbar.
Eight minutes later, things went from bad to worse for the Black and Whites after the referee awarded a penalty for a kick in the box by Turkish-born German defender Taylan Bulut on Eyüpspor’s French player Lenny Pintor, who ended up on the ground. The penalty was converted by Emre Akbaba, who shot decisively to make it 2-1 to the home team.
Two points lost and cries of “resignation” for the club’s management
Beşiktaş saw the scoreboard go against them despite dominating possession and scoring chances, once again demonstrating the problems they have had in recent seasons. The respite finally came in the 76th minute, when Cengiz Ünder equalised with a left-footed shot from the edge of the six-yard box that beat the keeper.
Yalçın’s team kept trying until the end – in the 88th minute Cengiz Ünder‘s powerful shot hit the post – but luck was not on their side tonight either, and the game ended in a draw. Proof of the final tension during the match is that, in the final 10 minutes of play, the referee showed 4 yellow cards.
Neither team was satisfied with the result: Eyüpspor remains with 15 points and in third place at the bottom, in a position of direct relegation to the second division; Beşiktaş, whose fans ended up calling from the stands for the resignation of the management and who had struggled to beat another bottom team the previous round of the league, dropped two points after the draw and now has 33 points, at an insurmountable distance – barring a miracle – from the leader, Galatasaray, who has 46 points after beating Karagümrük in the Istanbul district of Fatih.
