In an intense and pulsating derby, Fenerbahçe was crowned Turkish Super Cup champion with a 2-0 win over Galatasaray at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, clinching their first title of the season against their historic rivals.
The final, the 52nd edition of the competition, pitted reigning league and cup winners Galatasaray against runners-up Fenerbahçe in what was the 405th official clash between the two clubs in their history.
The match was decided by goals from Matteo Guendouzi – who scored with a shot from outside the box in the 28th minute – and Jayden Oosterwolde, who scored in the 48th minute of the second half with a half-volley after a corner kick by Spaniard Marco Asensio, sealing Fenerbahçe’s victory in the first official trophy of the season.
From the outset, the Yellow Canaries imposed their rhythm and controlled much of the attacking action in the match. For its part, Galatasaray, who arrived with some important absentees due to the African Cup of Nations, including their Nigerian star Victor Osimhen and Senegalese defender Ismail Jakobs, showed the offensive shortcomings of its deployment on the pitch and could not cope with the solid defence and effective transition of its rival.
With this result, Fenerbahçe adds another Super Cup title to its trophy cabinet against one of its biggest opponents in Turkish football, consolidating a promising start to the year after the departure of Mourinho in August, and reaffirming itself as a clear candidate to snatch the Turkish Super League title from Okan Buruk‘s side.
