Beşiktaş beat Kocaelispor 2–1 in the match played this Sunday at the Tüpraş Stadium in Istanbul, in a fixture for matchday seven of the Turkish Süper Lig. The home side sealed the win in the first half thanks to goals from Orkun Kökçü and Dušan Vlahovic, whilst Show scored the visitors’ only goal.
Three goals in the first half
Beşiktaş started the match on the front foot and were rewarded in the 18th minute. Following a pass from Amir Murillo behind the defence, Václav Černý received the ball on the right wing and sent a cross into the box which Orkun Kökçü converted into the first goal of the match with a low right-footed shot that hit the left post on its way in.
Kocaelispor reacted and came close to equalising shortly afterwards. In the 20th minute, Mahamadou Susoho smacked a powerful shot against the post, forcing the Black Eagles’ goalkeeper to dive in an attempt to prevent the goal – in what was probably one of the visitors’ clearest chances of the first half.
The green-and-black side’s persistence paid off in the 27th minute when, following a corner kick and several deflections inside the box, Show took advantage of the loose ball with the goal practically empty to shoot past goalkeeper Alexander Nübel and make it 1–1.
However, the draw was short-lived. The referee awarded a penalty to Beşiktaş in the 29th minute, following an incident in which Tiago Djaló went down inside the box after a blatant pull by Tayfur Bingöl, who was practically straddling the Portuguese player. Dušan Vlahovic stepped up to convert the penalty in the 31st minute, restoring the lead for the Istanbul side.
Kocaelispor sought an equaliser without success
The score remained unchanged for the remainder of the match, although there was no shortage of chances. After the restart, Kocaelispor tried to get back on level terms and had a good chance in the 48th minute, when Metehan Altunbaş broke into the box unmarked and forced Nübel into a save; from the rebound, despite being on the ground, the striker tried again with the goal gaping, but his shot ended up sailing over the bar.
Beşiktaş also came close to extending their lead. In the 52nd minute, İlhan Fakılı smacked a powerful shot against the post and, in the ensuing play, Trossard fired off two consecutive shots which were saved by the opposing goalkeeper, Serhat Öztaşdelen.
In the closing minutes, the visitors kept up the pressure in search of an equaliser, but were unable to break down the home defence. The final whistle confirmed Beşiktaş’s 2–1 victory, a result that allows the Istanbul side to pick up three crucial points in the title race; with this win, the black-and-whites reach 15 points and sit in second place in the table, just one point behind Galatasaray. For their part, Kocaelispor remain on 12 points and drop to 7th place in the Süper Lig.
