Seven people, including two children, were rescued by firefighters after a fire broke out this afternoon and spread to two buildings in the historic district of Beyoğlu, in the very heart of Istanbul.
The incident occurred at 14:30 Turkish time (13:30 CET) on Hava Hoş Street, a narrow alley in the Bülbül neighbourhood about 500 metres from the famous Taksim Square; according to reports from witnesses and local residents, the fire broke out for unknown reasons in the attic of a 5-storey building, and quickly spread to another adjacent 4-storey building.
Alerted by neighbours, the emergency services rushed to the scene as panic ensued as people remained trapped inside both buildings. In the end, firefighters were able to rescue a total of 7 people, two of them children, whose state of health is not serious. Extinguishing the fire was very difficult due to the narrowness of the streets in this area of central Istanbul. Just a few days ago, another fire in a nightclub in Istanbul claimed the lives of 29 people.
