Authorities in Turkey have arrested at least 324 suspects in recent hours during operations targeting the ISIS terrorist group, carried out in around 50 provinces across the country, the Turkish Ministry of the Interior reported on Wednesday.
According to a statement published on the Ministry’s social media accounts, the operations against the terrorist organisation ISIS were carried out in 47 provinces, including Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir, as part of a security operation resulting from coordination between the General Directorate of Security, the National Intelligence Organisation (MİT) and the public prosecutor’s office.
During the raids, a total of 324 people suspected of links to the extremist group were arrested, including several individuals with outstanding arrest warrants, as well as suspects accused of providing financial support to the organisation and people who had previously participated in activities linked to the jihadist group, reported the Turkish broadcaster TRT Haber.
In the course of the operation, Turkish security forces seized a pistol, four rifles, 122 rounds of ammunition and financial assets valued at 9,679,750 Turkish liras (around €182,000), as well as numerous documents and digital materials belonging to the terrorist organisation.
ISIS attacks in recent months on Turkish soil
On 7 April, suspected members of ISIS (Daesh) opened fire in Istanbul on police officers guarding a building housing the Israeli Consulate in the city; one of the attackers was killed and two others were wounded in the subsequent shooting, whilst two police officers sustained minor injuries. Although the Turkish authorities did not officially blame ISIS for the attack, a nationwide operation against the terrorist group was launched following the incident and dozens of suspects were arrested.
Similarly, last December three Turkish police officers and six ISIS members were killed during an operation against a house used by individuals linked to the jihadist group, located on the outskirts of the city of Yalova, situated in north-western Turkey, some 90 kilometres south of Istanbul. The exchange of fire between the terrorists and the security forces lasted for seven hours, forcing the evacuation of local residents.
