The National Intelligence Organisation of Turkey (MİT) captured in the border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan and transferred to Turkey Mehmet Gören, a prominent member of ISIS-K who had been ordered to organise suicide attacks against civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey and several European countries, according to data from security sources published in the last hours.
According to information published by Turkish media such as TRTHaber, the operation is part of intelligence efforts to disrupt ISIS activities. The MİT tracked down a terrorist of Turkish origin who had left Turkey for the Afghanistan-Pakistan region to join the ranks of the extremist group. Investigations confirmed that the suspect was active in the terrorist organisation’s training camps and eventually rose to a leadership position within ISIS-K (Islamic State – Khorasan Province).
Turkish intelligence operatives determined that Mehmet Gören, codenamed ‘Yahya‘, had previously operated alongside Özgür Altun, alias ‘Abu Yasir Al Turki‘, now arrested and imprisoned in Turkey, who played a key role in transferring ISIS fighters from Türkiye to the Afghanistan-Pakistan region. The same sources indicated that Gören was tasked with carrying out suicide terrorist attacks against civilians in several countries in Europe, as well as in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkey.
After intensive and thorough surveillance and tracking of the target, Turkish intelligence services established that Gören had survived bombings against ISIS positions in Pakistan and was trying to hide. Therefore, once his exact position was located, an extraction operation was launched, culminating in his capture and transfer to Turkey.
Once on Turkish territory, Gören gave details during interrogation about his relationship with ISIS-K terrorist Özgür Altun, the recruitment structure of the organisation, the armed and religious training he received from ISIS and the mission he was given to commit suicide bombings. As a result of this operation, Turkish intelligence services were able to thwart attack plans against Turkey and other countries, uncover the terrorist group’s recruitment networks and confiscate the organisation’s operational plans.
