More than 1,500 runners took part in a unique night race through Istanbul‘s historic Grand Bazaar on 21 December, coinciding with the longest night of the year, in a singular event that turned one of the world’s oldest covered markets into an unusual sporting circuit.
The race, organised by Dust Event and attended by 1,500 participants, started at the emblematic Çemberlitaş Square – one of the city’s historic sites as the site of the column of the Roman Emperor Constantine – according to the Turkish news agency Anatolia; from there, the runners passed through the historic gate of Istanbul University and then entered the winding streets and interior corridors of the Grand Bazaar, returning to the starting point after completing the course.
The competition was held in two phases. In the first phase, the athletes ran three laps of the same circuit to complete a total of 5 kilometres. The top five overall and in each age group qualified for the final, which consisted of a single lap of the same course. All participants who finished the race received a medal, while after completing the final phase, prizes were awarded to the top three in the general classification and the age group classification.
In the men’s category, Hacı Sebahattin Çavga won the Istanbul Grand Bazaar race, followed by Yusuf Taç and Doruk Öztürk; as for the women’s race, victory went to Funda Karayaman, with Maria Kolpakova in second place and Nil Meryem Aydemir finishing in third place.
