At least 14 people trapped in their vehicles were rescued by emergency services after severe floods hit the province of Osmaniye in southern Turkey late yesterday, due to several rivers overflowing in the region as a result of torrential rain.
Turkish media reported that heavy rainfall yesterday afternoon on the south-east coast of Turkey caused severe flooding, mainly affecting the district of Kadirli in Osmaniye, sweeping away several vehicles and leaving many people trapped in their cars due to the sudden rise in the level of four rivers that cross the region: Bülbül, Şirinler, Sarıböğsek and Savrun.
In total, eight vehicles were swept away by the water – seven of which were found this morning in the Bülbül River – and 14 people had to be rescued after being trapped in their cars. The floods also caused power blackouts in many areas of the Kadirli district, as well as extensive damage to homes, workplaces and greenhouses.
The governor of Osmaniye province, Erdinç Yılmaz, reported that as the water level began to drop this morning after the rains stopped, clean-up work began and inspection teams were deployed on the ground to assess all the damage. Yılmaz said that one of the vehicles swept away by the water is still being searched for, but that ‘for now, there are no reports of deaths or injuries’ as a result of the floods.
