Veterinary associations in Turkey called for a national strike day with protests organised throughout the country to denounce violence and aggression against fellow veterinarians, a problem that also plagues the health sector due to assaults by patients.
“Our colleagues are abandoning a profession they started with great enthusiasm, especially the younger ones are looking for a future abroad. Action must be taken now, all vets should be protected by the Law on Violence in Health Care (which protects health workers),” said the chairman of the central committee of the Turkish Veterinary Association. The strike was triggered after a Turkish vet, Ceren Eroğlu, was attacked by four people at her clinic in Ankara in early August, after the death of a cat that had been admitted to the clinic with an infection.
