Right after the lockdown, Turkey celebrated yesterday, May 19, Atatürk, Youth and Sports Commemoration Day, during which many buildings are dressed with large flags and portraits of Atatürk, such as these skyscrapers in the financial district of Maslak, in Istanbul. May 19 commemorates the day in 1919 when Mustafa Kemal, later called Atatürk (Father of the Turks), landed in the Turkish city of Samsun, which was considered the first step of the so-called Turkish War of Independence that In 1923, it would lead to the definitive expulsion of the European powers from Turkey and the birth of the Republic.
