Turkish police confiscated two invaluable bibles at least 500 years old on Tuesday when they were intended to be smuggled across the Turkish-Greek border, Turkish media reported.
The finding occurred in the Turkish province of Edirne, which borders Greece, when the two historical manuscripts were discovered hidden in a shoe box inside a car headed for the Greek border.
Three people were detained by the Turkish security forces in connection with the incident. Both objects were later handed over to those responsible for the Edirne Museum, where they will be examined by experts to determine their exact age and origin.
With remains of 42 civilisations and some 3,000 ancient cities on its territory, Turkey possesses a vast cultural and historical heritage but is also a paradise for antique smugglers. Every year thousands of operations against the smuggling of historical objects are carried out across the country to try to prevent the illegal sale of old pieces of incalculable value, with hundreds or thousands of years of history.
