A man who got into an argument and struggled with a taxi driver, and ended up stealing the taxi, was arrested by police in Antalya, southern Turkey, after crashing the vehicle a few minutes later: an incident that was fully recorded by the security camera placed inside the vehicle.
Turkish news agencies reported that the incident took place during the celebration of the Feast of Sacrifice, although the Turkish press has now reported the story; it was approximately 1:00 a.m. when Mustafa B., a 62-year-old taxi driver by profession, picked up two passengers in the Yeşildere neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city; one of the passengers got off in the Teomanpaşa neighbourhood after a journey of less than 2 kilometres, while the other, a 33-year-old man identified as Musa Ü., said he wanted to travel to the Masa Dağı area, some 7 kilometres away.
During the journey, the tension between the two escalated to a point where the taxi driver stopped the vehicle and asked the passenger to get out of the taxi, annoyed with his behaviour. An argument then began between the two outside the vehicle, at which point Musa Ü. – apparently under the influence of alcohol – tried to force himself into the car, starting a struggle between the two, during which the taxi driver took the opportunity to press the so-called panic button, which is used to alert a system that communicates with the police. Musa Ü. managed to get away from the taxi driver and, still with the driver’s door open, started the car and sped off.
The man then drove for unknown reasons back from Masa Dağı to Yeşildere, making the reverse journey and driving while displaying an apparently normal behaviour, until after about 9 kilometres he crashed the car into the median on Kızılarık Street: he resulted unhurt and left the vehicle on foot.
After being notified of the incident and receiving the suspect’s description, the Turkish police arrested the taxi “hijacker” approximately one hour later; he was taken to the police station to make a statement and was subsequently brought before a court, which ordered him to be remanded in custody pending trial. According to Turkish press reports, the suspect had been released from prison only two weeks before this unusual incident, which was recorded from start to finish by the taxi’s security camera .
