A young Turkish man who makes a living collecting cardboard from the street has made the news in Turkey after returning several gold coins and pieces of jewellery that he found in the garbage, worth around 7,000 euros, which the rightful owners were finally able to recover. ‘I have no right to take what is not mine,’ said the young man, who has received much praise for his honesty.
Turkish media outlets reported that the incident took place in the town of Bodrum, a well-known tourist destination on the Turkish coast of the Aegean Sea. Aslan Kalkay, 22, was looking for waste paper in a garbage container in the street when he came across a black bag that someone had thrown away with other rubbish. When he opened it, he was surprised to discover that inside there was various jewellery and objects that appeared to be made of gold, including coins, medallions and necklaces.
Kalkay decided to take the objects to a local jeweller, who confirmed that the pieces were indeed made of gold, with an estimated value of around 300,000 Turkish lira (almost 7,000 euros). On confirming their authenticity, Kalkay – who is not exactly well off – had no hesitation in handing them over to the Bodrum Police Department, which was subsequently able to return the jewellery to its owner, who had mistakenly thrown them away in the bin while cleaning a house.
‘When I found the gold, at first of course I didn’t believe it was real, as anyone would. After going to a jeweller and confirming it, I took it straight to the police station. I think it was worth about 300,000 liras. After all, everyone has things that belong to them. I have no right to take what is not my property,’ said the young man.
Kalkay also thanked the Bodrum police, who, following his gesture of honesty, interceded on his behalf and helped him find a job in a restaurant in the city. Bravo!
