Turkey‘s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced the largest anti-drug operation in the history of the Republic, in which 525 traffickers were arrested in an operation dubbed “Narkokapan-Ankara” that took place in the Turkish capital.
According to the minister, quoted by several media outlets in the country, the operation was launched at 5:00 a.m. after six months of surveillance and monitoring and targeted street dealers (called torbacı in Turkish). A total of 1,461 teams and 4,768 police officers were deployed, supported by 40 trained dogs and four drones. The raids were carried out simultaneously in 626 locations in Ankara, leading to the arrest of 525 suspects, although the operation is still ongoing and there could be further arrests.
‘We have carried out the largest drug operation in the history of our Republic in our capital, Ankara. The operation focused on street dealers who sell drugs in neighbourhoods and streets, using internet communication platforms, and who act as extensions of poison dealers who target our young people,’ Yerlikaya said.
‘We have tracked the suspects through technical and physical surveillance. We have documented all criminal activities one by one and launched the operation this morning. We have shown these poison dealers, who dare to steal the future of our youth, that they will face the consequences. If they try to harm our youth, they will answer to the law. Those who try to poison our nation will see their own lives turn into poison. Drugs are the greatest enemy of humanity, and we will continue to fight these poison dealers on behalf of our country and humanity,’ the minister added.
