A municipal worker from the municipality of Kepez, a central district of the southern Turkish city of Antalya, has made headlines after returning a bag he found in the street containing several gold coins as well as a certain amount of money.
According to Turkish media, the protagonist of the good deed is Özkan Koçak, a cleaning employee of the city council, who found the bag next to a garden wall in the Zeytinlik district on the outskirts of Antalya on Tuesday while carrying out his daily duties. Realising that there was money and a total of 5 gold coins inside, Koçak informed her supervisor and took the bag to the municipal office, where after inspection the owner was identified as Dürdane Göçmen, a 76-year-old woman.
After being alerted of the finding, the woman presented herself at the municipal offices, where the bag was handed over to her with its contents intact. Göçmen, unable to hold back her tears, hugged Koçak and thanked him repeatedly for his gesture. ‘God bless you, my son. May your family never have any difficulties’, she said to the municipal employee, to whom she wanted to offer a reward, but he refused, saying that he was only doing his job.
According to the woman’s daughter, Ümmü Göçmen, her mother had been grief-stricken after losing the bag with the gold coins inside the day before. The value of the coins – called çeyrek altın in Turkish – is estimated at around 600 euros. In reward for his kind gesture, the mayor of Kepez, Mesut Kocagöz, rewarded afterwards Özkan Koçak with a gold coin, Turkish media reported.
