The unemployment rate in Turkey fell by 0.7 points in 2024 to 8.7% of the labour force, its lowest level in 12 years, according to the latest data published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), which confirms the continued recovery of the labour market.
The report, presented today by TÜİK, reveals that the number of people unemployed aged 15 or over fell by 151, 000 people compared to the previous year, reaching 3.11 million; the unemployment rate fell to 7.1% among men and 11.8% among women, compared to 7.7% and 12.6% respectively in 2023.
Youth unemployment – referring to the 15 to 24 age group – also improved last year, falling by 1.1 points to 16.3%, with the rate standing at 13.1% among men and 22.3% among women (in 2023 it was 14.3% and 23.2%, respectively).
The employment rate among people aged 15 and over rose from 48.3% in 2023 to 49.5% in 2024, increasing by some 988,000 people to reach a figure of 32.62 million people employed. For its part, the rate of participation in the labour force registered an increase of 0.9 percentage points compared to 2023, reaching 54.2%.
Also noteworthy are the good figures for the Turkish economy in terms of employment in the service sector, where 18.9 million people were employed in 2024, compared to 18.23 million the previous year. According to statistical data presented by TÜİK, the service sector accounted for 57.9% of total employment in Turkey in 2024, followed by 20.7% in the industrial sector (6.75 million employees, compared to 6.71 million in 2023); agricultural activity represented 14.8% of total employment (4.83 million in 2024, 4.7 million in 2023), while construction activity accounted for 6.6% (2.16 million in 2024, 2 million in 2023).
