Turkish army conducts large-scale naval drills in the Mediterranean

Turkish military launched an 11-day large-scale naval exercise in the Eastern Mediterranean on 7 May, involving 15,000 professional military personnel. Dubbed “Sea Wolf II”, the Turkish navy‘s drills are aimed at improving “the assessment, forecasting and decision-making capabilities of naval units, as well as testing interoperability procedures between the commands of other forces”.

In a speech to military personnel participating in the exercises via videoconference, Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan stressed the importance for Turkey of strengthening its defence capabilities “despite the fact that we occasionally have to face covert or overt embargoes imposed by some allies”.

“We are engaged in a resolute fight along several fronts, from unmanned systems to air defence, from armed vehicles to electronic warfare systems,” said the Turkish president, who stressed that recent developments in the region are a reminder of the importance of the slogan “a strong army, a strong Turkey“.

The naval drills in the Mediterranean are scheduled to continue until 18 May. The exercise involves 100 surface ships, eight submarines, 39 aircraft, 16 helicopters, 28 unmanned aerial vehicles and seven unmanned maritime vehicles.
