Overweight and obesity are a growing problem in Turkish society, where official data indicate that 20% of Turks suffer from obesity: according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Turkey is the country with the highest rate of obesity and overweight in Europe, with 66.8% of its population suffering from these health problems.
Overweight is a condition characterised by an excess accumulation of fat in the body; when the Body Mass Index (the ratio between a person’s height and weight) is 30 or more, it is no longer overweight but obesity, which aggravates the health consequences.
Difficulty sleeping, excessive sweating, breathing problems, snoring, fatigue, swollen legs, irregular menstruation, sexual dysfunction, back pain, reflux, bloating or constipation are some of the health problems that overweight and obese people can suffer from.
In addition, obesity is an important triggering factor in the development of several serious diseases, such as cardiovascular pathologies, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, depression, fatty liver, cirrhosis, and certain types of cancer. In other words: excessive calorie intake is linked to a number of serious and chronic diseases. The WHO warns that 1 in 6 adults in Europe is obese, and almost 60% are overweight and obese, leading to the death of 1.2 million Europeans per year.
