Turkey applauded the resolution adopted late on Monday by the UN Security Council which, for the first time since the start of the war in Gaza on 7 October, calls for an immediate ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.
Akif Çağatay Kılıç, chief advisor to Turkish President Tayyip Erdoğan, said after hearing the news that ‘although it is a late decision’, the Security Council resolution must be implemented immediately and that the international community must get involved to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza. ‘We are ready to do our part (…) to put an end to the cruelty and inhuman genocide that has been going on for months in Gaza,’ he was quoted as saying by Turkish media.
The resolution – approved by 14 of the 15 members of the Security Council, and thanks to the abstention of Russia, which has the right to veto – was presented by the US and mentions the proposal announced days ago by US President Joe Biden for a three-phase peace plan, calling on Israel and Hamas to accept the roadmap and adding that both sides must ‘fully implement the terms of the resolution without delay and without conditions’.
The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas announced today that it accepts the terms of the resolution adopted last night in the Security Council and is ready to negotiate its details, according to Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri. Turkey has been in intensive contact with Hamas – which, unlike most Western countries, it does not consider a ‘terrorist’ group – since the outbreak of the war in Gaza, where more than 37,000 Palestinian civilians have so far been killed by the Israeli offensive, most of them women and children. Blinken, visiting Israel to lobby the Netanyahu government, has said the Hamas announcement was a ‘hopeful sign’.
