A Turkish weather expert has issued a public warning that this summer will be a ‘meteorological disaster’ and that already hot temperatures – with thermometers reaching up to 4ºC above the usual average for this time of year – ‘will get even worse’, reaching record levels in July and August.
With temperatures already reaching 35°C in Ankara, 37°C in Istanbul, 38°C in Izmir and 40°C in Antalya, Orhan Şen told Turkish media that thermometers will continue rising: ‘Of course, there will be fluctuations. On 7 June we had a slightly more comfortable weekend, in line with seasonal averages. However, from 11 June, temperatures will rise again in the Marmara, the Aegean, the western Mediterranean and eastern Anatolia, potentially reaching 40 degrees,’ the meteorologist said.
“July and August will be even warmer. We will most likely break records… We are in a weather disaster,’ the expert insisted, highlighting the unusual intensity and frequency of heat waves Turkey is experiencing. While last summer Istanbul set an all-time record temperature of 41.3°C, Şen warns that ‘this year it is likely to reach 42 or 43 degrees. Get ready!’
