Turkey will use oxygenation technology, initially injecting oxygen at a depth of 30 metres at 5 points in the Sea of Marmara, to reduce the marine mucilage (or sea snot) that has been spreading throughout the sea since January. If this technique already used in other countries works, oxygen will be injected in other areas of the Marmara. Sea snot is a viscous, jelly-like substance formed from phytoplankton and microorganisms that covers the surface and bottom of the sea, suffocating and killing all marine life. Since Turkey launched the largest cleaning operation in its history at sea, more than 4,500 cubic metres of mucilage have already been collected.
