The Turkish government ordered this Monday the closure of schools throughout the country after the wave of earthquakes that has devastated the southeastern region of Anatolia, and which has so far left a toll of victims of 1,498 dead and 8,533 injured. The closure will remain in effect at least until February 13, and is intended to focus efforts on rescue and recovery efforts in the disaster area. According to the Agency for Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD), at least 2,834 buildings have collapsed after the main 7.8 earthquake, which was followed by 130 aftershocks of up to 6.5 and later by another 7.6 earthquake. Nearly 10,000 emergency and rescue personnel work in the area.
