Death toll from the 7.7 earthquake in Turkey rises to more than 900

The death toll from the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that shook southeastern Turkey this morning now stands at 912 dead, while there are 5,385 injured. The earthquake occurred at 4:17 local time (2:17 CET) only 7 km deep with an epicenter in Pazarcık, in the southeastern province of Kahramanmaraş, also affecting the provinces of Malatya, Şanlıurfa, Osmaniye and Diyarbakır, and was followed by two strong aftershocks of 6.4 and 6.5 that shook the province of Gaziantep. Also northern Syria suffered a violent earthquake that affected Aleppo, Hama and Latakia, killing more than 200 people.
