Turkey, with more than 85.2 million inhabitants, is the18th most populous country among 194 countries in the world, representing 1.1% of the planet’s inhabitants, according to data published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) days before the celebration of World Population Day on July 11. In 2022, the total world population reached 8,000 million inhabitants for the first time in history, with China leading the ranking as the most populous country on the planet, with 1,430 million people, closely followed by India (1,410 million) and in third place by the United States (338.3 million): these 3 countries together represent 40% of the planet’s population.
However, it is the African countries those that have the highest proportion of children, led by the Central African Republic with 55.8%, while North Korea (14.2%) and Japan (14.2%) are the ones that have a lower proportion of children under 18 years of age among their population. Throughout the world, the proportion of the population that are children is on average 30%: in Turkey the percentage of its inhabitants that are children remains at 26.5%, below the world average but well above the average for the EU, where Italy is the country with the fewest children (15.3%).
