Turkey‘s Interior Ministry has published the most common names for newborn babies in the country in 2024, with ‘Defne’ for girls and ‘Alparslan’ for boys being the most common.
According to Turkey’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, quoted by several Turkish newspapers such as Hürriyet, data provided by the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs shows that between 1 January and 31 December 2024 a total of 937,369 newborns were registered in Turkey, of which 15,065 were twins and 290 were triplets, as well as six sets of quadruplets.
Among the new names for boys, ‘Alparslan’ ranked first with a total of 8,304 babies being given this name. Other equally popular names were ‘Göktuğ’ (5,796), ‘Yusuf’ (5,034), ‘Metehan’ (4,878) or ‘Ömer Asaf’ (4,349).
Regarding newborn girls, ‘Defne’ was the most popular name with a total of 7,661 babies given this name, followed by ‘Asel’ (7,554), ‘Zeynep’ (6,722), ‘Asya’ (5,167) or ‘Gökçe’ (4,838).
‘May our babies enjoy good fortune. I am confident that they will be good sons and daughters for our state, our homeland, our people and for their families,’ Turkey’s interior minister wrote on his social media profile.
