Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has announced that Russia supports Turkey’s proposal for a stable and lasting peace in the Middle East, in which Ankara proposes a formula of “guarantor countries” to ensure the fulfilment of an Israeli-Palestinian agreement based on the two-state solution.
“We are ready to discuss any constructive proposal. This initiative (by Turkey) that I have heard is clearly dictated by the desire to achieve a de-escalation in the conflict and to normalise the situation,” Lavrov said during a press conference in Pyongyang. “We would like to hear it directly from our Turkish friends, with whom we are in constant contact,” the Russian representative added. Lavrov warned that the risk of the war between Israel and Hamas escalating into a major conflict in the Middle East is very high; in this regard, he criticised the veto once again imposed by the US in the UN Security Council against a resolution demanding a halt to all hostilities to deliver humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.
