Ankara harshly criticised the “hostile and provocative” statements by the Greek government against Turkey following the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque, and the burning of a Turkish flag by far-right Greek nationalists in Thessalonica. The protesters then went to the Turkish consulate in the city, where they burned another flag. Ankara accuses Athens of instigating these protests: “Greece should awake from its Byzantine dream … Somebody cannot accept that Istanbul belongs to Turkey and to Muslims,” it said in a statement. Protests against immigrants and Islam in Thessalonica have intensified in recent months.
