Climate change is causing less and less snow and is melting glaciers of Mount Ararat, Turkey’s highest mountain at 5,137 meters high, where experts such as Professor Oğuz Şimşek warn that a large glacier measuring more than 10 square kilometres that survived the last ice age is melting, causing landslides that threaten inhabited areas and mountaineers climbing Ararat. A recent survey reflects the growing concern about the consequences of climate change among Turks: 6 out of 10 consider it a serious threat comparable to the coronavirus pandemic.
