Turkey, sinkholes in Konya

More than 600 sinkholes have appeared in Konya, Turkey

The number of sinkholes that have appeared in the Konya province of Turkey has doubled in just one year, from 330 in early 2020 to more than 600 today, as scientists warn that the phenomenon, caused by the sinking of the ground due to the drop in the phreatic zone because of excessive water consumption, will continue in the coming years. The local population is scared because the holes, which can reach up to 150 meters deep and are concentrated in the Karapınar district, appear closer and closer to residential areas. The authorities are now studying creating a risk map and ways to fill them.
