Turkey has begun series production of its first national high-speed train, developed entirely using its own technology and engineering, according to an announcement by the country’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, marking a further step forward in enhancing national rail manufacturing capabilities.
The train, developed by TÜRASAŞ (Turkish Railway Vehicles Industry), is designed to reach an operational speed of 225 kilometres per hour.
TÜRASAŞ begins production of the second domestically produced train
The National High-Speed Train project, manufactured at the TÜRASAŞ facilities in Sakarya (north-west Türkiye), has reached a new milestone with the start of construction of the second train set whilst testing of the first continues. Uraloğlu explained that the aim is to manufacture a total of 14 trainsets of the national high-speed train: seven in 2027 and another seven in 2028, according to reports in the Turkish media.
The minister noted in this regard that testing of the first train set is progressing satisfactorily; with production of the second now underway, the project has officially entered its mass production phase.
Each train set will consist of eight carriages and will have a capacity of 577 passengers. The trains have been developed using domestic engineering, whilst critical systems such as the Train Control and Management System and the traction system have also been designed and manufactured domestically in collaboration with ASELSAN.
Turkey’s first high-speed train factory
Series production will continue at the new plant once Turkey’s first factory dedicated to the manufacture of high-speed trains comes on stream. Construction of this facility, located in Sakarya, is now 90% complete.
“We have reached 90% completion of Turkey’s first high-speed train factory, which we have built on a site covering 18,000 square metres. Once our factory is complete, we will carry out the production, assembly and testing of our National High-Speed Train sets all under one roof,” announced the minister.
“With our new factory, we will have the capacity to produce one high-speed train set per month. We will continue our series production efforts at our new factory. Our first train set, which has an operating speed of 225 kilometres per hour, reached a speed of 250 kilometres per hour during dynamic safety tests on the track,” Uraloğlu concluded.
