Turkish defence company ASELSAN announced the successful launch into space of its second artificial satellite, the LUNA-2, in a launch that took place from California aboard a SpaceX rocket and as part of its Space Internet of Things (Space IoT) programme.
According to a company statement, ASELSAN‘s work in multiple areas to successfully carry out this launch, from satellite communication systems and payloads to ground control infrastructure and platform solutions, reinforces its strategic position in the field of space and defence technology in Turkey.
Despite its small size as a nanosatellite, LUNA-2 will provide secure and uninterrupted sensor data even in the most remote areas of the planet. Thanks to its special communication system based on LoRa (a low-power, long-range wireless communication technology designed for IoT), the satellite will be able to cover vast surface areas with very low power consumption, Turkish daily Habertürk reported.
ASELSAN noted that all design, development, production, integration and testing processes for the LUNA-2 satellite were carried out in-house. The flight software, ground control software and the LoRa transceiver card used as payload and data transfer unit were also developed by the company’s engineers using in-house technology developed in Türkiye.
The first satellite in the series, the LUNA-1, was launched into orbit in December last year aboard a Falcon 9 rocket also launched by SpaceX. According to ASELSAN, the launch of the LUNA-2 satellite into space will strengthen its capabilities in the field of Space IoT and contribute to Turkey’s goal of developing an independent, competitive and sustainable ecosystem in the field of space industry and technology.
