Turkey inaugurates today what is considered the largest solar power plant in Europe and the5th largest in the world. With a cost of $1 billion, and built on the outskirts of the Turkish town of Karapınar (in the province of Konya) by the energy division of the Turkish holding company Kalyon, the solar plant has an installed capacity of 1,350 megawatts generated by 3.3 million solar panels, which produce 3 million kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, enough to power 2 million people, and thus avoiding the emission into the atmosphere of 1.5 million tons of carbon per year. With a total area of 20 million square meters, after the inauguration of this plant 20% of the total energy produced by Turkey comes now directly from the Sun.
