Turkish government is considering the idea of installing solar panels on lakes and swamps to reduce water evaporation and the threat of drought due to the consequences of climate change. The installation of floating solar energy panels in dams and lakes, an idea already widespread in other countries and which was implemented in Turkey for the first time in 2017, allows to reduce evaporation levels by up to 54%, and would generate 2.4 gigawatts of electricity and about 380 million euros in profits, according to studies carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture. If the project is carried out, the panels will be installed in 200 lakes, 822 dams and 507 ponds of water not intended for human consumption throughout the country.
