Fenerbahçe put on one of the finest displays of the season in the Süper Lig, thrashing Eyüpspor 8–0 at the Chobani Stadium in Istanbul: a result that not only allowed the Istanbul club to regain their confidence following their latest defeat in Gaziantep, but has in fact become the biggest win in their history and the biggest victory in the Turkish league in almost 30 years.
The team managed by İsmail Kartal – back in charge following his recent threat to resign – had all but sealed the match by half-time. Mason Greenwood opened the scoring in the 5th minute with a penalty, after Turkish referee Kadir Sağlam awarded the spot-kick following a VAR review of a challenge on Vedat Muriqi. Barely two minutes later, it was the Kosovar striker himself who extended the lead by firing into an empty net following a move down the pitch.
Muriqi scored again in the 21st minute, capitalising on a loose ball in the box following a save by the goalkeeper, and Matteo Guendouzi netted the fourth in the 38th minute with a shot from the edge of the box that went in just inside the post. In first-half stoppage time, İrfan Can Kahveci made it 5-0 with a free-kick, much to the despair of the Eyüpspor goalkeeper, who watched helplessly as the Turkish midfielder fired home unchallenged, with three defenders failing to make a single attempt to stop him. Fenerbahçe thus went into the break with a crushing lead that reflected their complete dominance on the pitch.
4 goals from Muriqi and a further 2 from Greenwood sealed the goal-fest
The second half followed the same script. Muriqi rounded off his spectacular performance with another two goals: one shortly after the start of the second half and another in the 55th minute, heading home directly from a corner to take his tally to four goals in the match. Greenwood then sealed the rout with his second goal of the afternoon in the 80th minute, after finding himself one-on-one with the away side’s goalkeeper.
This victory has several historic dimensions. Fenerbahçe scored five goals in the first half, making them the first team in Europe’s top leagues to reach that figure during the first half of a match this season. Furthermore, their seven goals in the first 55 minutes set another club record in the competition. Finally, the last time a team won by a margin of eight goals in the Turkish Süper Lig was on 7 December 1996, when Sarıyer SK also defeated Çanakkale Dardanelspor 8–0.
The victory takes Fenerbahçe’s tally to 10 points after six matchdays, although they still occupy sixth place, and comes after a difficult spell that had increased the pressure on Kartal and the club’s management. Following the match, the manager emphasised the importance of getting back to playing good football to win back the support of the fans. Eyüpspor, for their part, remain bottom of the table with just 3 points after suffering five defeats.
Amedspor make history and top the Süper Lig
The matchday also produced another particularly remarkable and memorable moment. The newly promoted Amedspor defeated Beşiktaş 3–2 in the city of Diyarbakır and ended matchday six as leaders of the Süper Lig, with 13 points. The side have recorded four wins, one draw and one defeat, with 15 goals scored and seven conceded.
The Diyarbakır side took the lead through goals from Gift Orban and Dia Saba before half-time. Beşiktaş pulled one back through Dušan Vlahović in the second half, but Furkan Soyalp restored the home side’s lead. Orkun Kökçü then scored from a penalty in added time, although Amedspor managed to hold on to the victory.
This unexpected win puts Amedspor at the top of the table, level on points with Galatasaray – whom Trabzonspor thrashed at home in a masterclass from Salah – but ahead of the reigning league champions thanks to a better goal difference.
It is an extraordinary start for a team that has only just joined the top flight of Turkish football and has already secured victories against major rivals such as Trabzonspor themselves and now Beşiktaş. This brings to a close a league matchday which, together with Fenerbahçe’s thrashing, will be remembered for a long time in Turkey.
