The Turkish government banned on Wednesday layoffs in areas affected by the recent earthquakes in the southeast of the country, while launching a wage support system to protect workers and companies in the disaster area, where more than 42,000 people have died and some 139,000 buildings have been seriously damaged. Under the plan, the State will partially cover the salaries of employees at companies that have been damaged by the quakes and who need to cut their working hours. The ban on layoffs includes 10 earthquake-affected provinces, which account for 10% of Turkey’s GDP and are home to 13.5 million people, 15% of the country’s population.
