Media in Turkey have echoed the story of Şeyhmus Erginoğlu, a 70-year-old man living in the city of Mardin, in southeastern Turkey, who over 25 years has planted 14,000 trees, turning a former wasteland into a forest. “I come every day to water the trees. Now the families come here and sit and have a snack in the shade of the trees. Planting trees is very comforting,” says Şeyhmus, of whom Turkey’s Minister of Forests has spoken on Twitter as an example to follow. Quoting a saying of the Prophet Muhammad, Şeyhmus adds: “If Judgement Day surprises you while you are planting a tree, continue and plant it.”
