The passion and effort of a single man from a small town in the Diyarbakır province of southeastern Turkey, which has planted 10,000 trees over the past 23 years, has managed to create an 8 km long orchard along a river. Ömer Gündoğan, a native of Yayvan village, was only 19 years old when, driving cattle 8 km from his village along the Anbar river, which runs through a barren and inhospitable landscape, he decided to plant the first trees; despite many laughing at him and telling him that his effort was useless, Gündoğan continued to plant trees on both banks of the river, taking care of them and watering them: only 3,000 of them managed to survive due to the poverty of the soil, but they have been enough to create a green corridor that now welcomes many animals and birds, turned into a pleasant place where many people now go to spend the afternoon by the river, in the shade of the trees. “Those who called me crazy, now they ask me with what love I have raised these trees. I have been doing it for 23 years, and I will continue planting trees as long as I live,” he says.
