The heavy rain that fell on Istanbul caused the road surface to collapse in the district of Esenyurt, to the west of the city, where a taxi plunged into a huge sinkhole, the size of which continued to grow as the rain fell: an incident that occurred two weeks after severe floods claimed several lives in the Turkish metropolis.
According to the Turkish news agency İHA, the incident took place on Ahmet Arif Street, in the Bağlarçeşme neighbourhood, when the taxi driver failed to notice the hole amidst the rain and ended up driving straight into it with his vehicle.
After receiving the report, police officers and municipal crews attended the scene. With the help of the fire brigades and thanks to the assistance of several people who came to their aid, they managed to pull the taxi out of the sinkhole. Although the vehicle sustained damage, particularly to the front, no one was injured in the incident.
As the rain continued, the hole kept getting bigger, so the teams deployed in the area cordoned off the enormous sinkhole with safety tape to prevent further accidents. Traffic on the street remained open with controlled flow whilst municipal workers continued their work at the scene.
