Millions of Turks have taken to the roads in a mass exodus from large cities such as Istanbul coinciding with the Feast of the Sacrifice (Qurban Bayramı, in Turkish), one of the most important festivals on the Muslim calendar; although it does not begin until next Tuesday, this year it is a long 9-day holiday that begins today Friday and does not end until July 26. In fact, many drivers already left yesterday July 15 – the national holiday for the anniversary of the failed coup – to vacation destinations on the Mediterranean coast. Although the government has not announced restrictions due to the coronavirus, more than 226,000 police officers will ensure that there are no traffic accidents, which last year claimed 60 lives during this holiday.
