Dogs, cats and birds will be able to travel for free on public transport in Istanbul, both by metro and by bus or ferry.
Coinciding with the celebration of the World Animal Day on Tuesday, the Istanbul Metropolitan City Council recently announced that pets will be able to travel on the city’s public transport, including metro, tram, bus and ferry.
The announcement specifies that dogs, cats and birds weighing less than 5 kilos will be able to travel for free throughout the day on the city’s main public transport services, while animals weighing more than 5 kg will be able to travel on hours from 7 to 10 in the morning and from 4 to 8 in the afternoon, outside peak hours.
Dogs will be required to travel on a leash and muzzle, while cats must travel in a bag or in a special carrier for them; similarly, birds will have to be transported in suitable cages. At the moment, the measure only allows dogs, cats and birds to use public transport, excluding other animals.
Although the Istanbul Metropolitan City Council has now made official the possibility that certain pets can travel on public transport, it´s well known the case of Boji, a street dog adopted by the city council itself, famous for having gotten used to wandering around the city using the subway and other means of transport, as if he was just another passenger.
