Torrential rains in northwest Turkey in recent weeks have caused water reserves in Istanbul, which were down to below 20% (and in the case of some dams below 5%), to rise to 39.62%, according to the Istanbul Water Management Agency (İSKİ).
Last 28 November, water reserves in Istanbul were still only at 25.47%. Previously, Istanbul authorities even planned to draw water from the bottom of some of the city’s dams if the autumn rains were not enough to fill the reservoirs; some water reserves reached only 4% of their capacity, with the drought affecting especially the European side of Istanbul. Even so, experts warn that the risk to the city’s water supply has not passed, and that it is urgent to optimise consumption and not waste water.
