One of the seven World Central Kitchen workers – the NGO of Spanish chef José Andrés – killed in Gaza during an Israeli attack, worked with the organisation in Turkey during the devastating earthquakes that devastated the southeast of the country and left 53,000 dead in February 2023, according to informations published by the Turkish daily Hürriyet.
The Turkish newspaper reports that a group of World Central Kitchen (WCK) members led by chef José Andrés himself headed to Turkey when they heard about the earthquakes while distributing food to Ukrainian refugees on the Polish border. Upon arriving in Turkey, they set up a food distribution centre in the Elbistan district of Turkey’s Kahramanmaraş province, the epicentre of the earthquakes, where they fed thousands of people in the aftermath of the disaster.
Hürriyet claims that among that group of World Central Kitchen workers was Damian Sobol, who worked in Elbistan relentlessly preparing up to three meals a day for earthquake victims in Turkey. Several weeks later Sobol returned to Poland, and subsequently joined José Andrés’ NGO team when they set off for Gaza to assist thousands of starving Palestinians. On 1 April, in an airstrike that the Israeli government has acknowledged was a “grave mistake”, a clearly identified WCK convoy was hit, killing six international workers of WCK – one of the few organisations still operating in Gaza – from Canada, the UK, Australia and Poland – including Sobol – and a Palestinian local worker.
