More than 50 million foreign tourists travelled to Turkey between January and November 2024, a 7.1% more than in the same period last year, according to the latest data released today by the Eurasian country’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
According to Turkish media, including Turks living abroad who visited their country of origin, the total number of tourists who travelled to Turkey in the first eleven months of this year – that is already ending – amounts to 57.36 million people. Last November alone, tourist arrivals grew by 8.25% compared to the same month in 2023, totalling 2.73 million, according to official figures from the ministry.
The largest group of foreign tourists visiting Turkey was again made up of Russian nationals, who accounted for 6.5 million visitors or 13% of the total, followed by Germans with 6.37 million (7% more than a year ago), British with 4.34 million (17% more), Iranians with 3 million (32% more) and Bulgarians with 2.7 million (2% more).
As for the destinations preferred by tourists visiting Turkey, Istanbul remains the favourite place among foreigners: in total, the Turkish metropolis welcomed 17.2 million visitors in the first eleven months of 2024, equivalent to 34% of the total. In second place was the Mediterranean resort of Antalya with 15.7 million tourists, while 4.94 million foreigners – mainly Bulgarians for shopping purposes – chose Edirne in Turkish Thrace as their destination.
