An incident this week in Kadıköy, a popular district on Istanbul‘s Asian coast, sparked controversy on social media when a speeding motorcyclist hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road in a crosswalk but at a red light, with opinions differing on who was to blame for the accident.
According to the Turkish daily Hürriyet, the incident took place on a road near the coast in the Bostancı neighbourhood, and was recorded by a security camera mounted on the motorcyclist’s helmet. The video shows the motorbike approaching at high speed a pedestrian crossing where many people are crossing at red lights; without slowing down, the motorcyclist shouts at the pedestrians to move aside, at which point he runs over an elderly woman, who falls to the ground screaming.
After the accident, several people immediately came to help the victim while some of them shouted at the driver asking him why he had not slowed down, while he defended himself by shouting that the traffic light was red for pedestrians. “She’s slow, she didn’t see it,” replied a man who was helping the woman. “You’re coming too fast,” insisted another person. Fortunately, despite being hit, the woman suffered only minor injuries.
